Inside Anorexia.Christine Halse, Anne Hone and Desiree Boughtwood
Every family struggling to deal with a daughter’s anorexia asks itself at some point, "How do other families cope with this?" and "Is our family’s experience different from or the same as that of other similarly affected families?" "Inside Anorexia" is a calm and measured attempt to respond to these questions. The book focuses on 8 teenage girls and their families, telling their stories through the words of the family members themselves, with all their several conflicting viewpoints and emotions. These real-life accounts illustrate just how diverse and yet stereotyped both the anorectic experience and anorexia’s effect upon the teenage female sufferer and her family can be. So many similarities – and yet so many differences. How do we make sense of all this and tease out the essentials from the biographical incidentals? Are there common threads that we can identify that might give us some clue to the still unknown whys and wherefores of this devastating disorder? And, most importantly, how have other families coped – and what worked? In the end "Inside Anorexia" offers no glib and easy answers. But it does offer many reassuring and valuable insights into how families find their way through the darkness and out into various kinds of light. If your teenage daughter is anorexic this book offers an "eyes wide open" look at the experiences and challenges this can entail. It may be worth noting that all the families featured here are of the type that might be called – and might well call themselves – "nice," happy" and "loving." These 8 varied accounts may not leave us any the wiser as to why anorexia happens to any particular family, but as an aid to understanding some of the issues involved "Inside Anorexia" offers more than just unlived clinical abstractions .

Beating Anorexia Step By Step :By Anna Paterson
Anna Paterson first charted her 14-year battle with anorexia and her initial steps on the road to recovery in Anorexic. Now 8 years on comes this self-help guide to recovery, the most recent of her growing number of eating disorders-related books. The guide is aimed at sufferers across the entire spectrum of eating disorders – from anorexia, through EDNOS, bulimia and binge eating disorder, to compulsive overeating. While Anna’s personal experience does at times result in a tendency to emphasise the anorectic experience over all others, she generally manages this inclusive approach pretty well by focusing on a variety of strategies for coping, challenging and change that are equally applicable to all forms of disordered eating. There are many well-conceived touches to this guide which lend it a unique identity among the abundance of eating disorder self-help titles currently available. The chapter on perfectionism, for example, is both welcome and helpful, as is the very much needed exploration of the issues around living at a healthy weight during and beyond the period of recovery. Coping with Setbacks and How to stop Dangerous Behaviours are other topics it is good to see addressed in a book like this. Although aimed squarely at sufferers, Beating Eating Disorders might well also serve to provide information and insight to their carers, family and friends. In short, anyone looking for a handy, non-specialist resource for steps towards eating disorder recovery is likely to find much of interest in here.
